English

At Woodchurch C of E, we believe that English is the foundation of our curriculum. Our main aim is to ensure every child becomes literate and progresses in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. It is essential to be aware of the differing groups of learners and vulnerable children in their class so we can plan and teach lessons which focus on the needs of each child to ensure every child can celebrate success. English will not only be a daily discrete lesson but is at the cornerstone of the entire curriculum. It is embedded within all our lessons, and we will strive for a high level of English for all. Through using high-quality texts, immersing children in vocabulary rich learning environments and ensuring new curriculum expectations and the progression of skills are met, the children will be exposed to a language heavy, creative and continuous English curriculum where reading and writing are intrinsically linked. This will not only enable them to become primary literate but will also develop a love of reading, creative writing and purposeful speaking and listening.

How we teach it

In Early Years, we focus on early development of communication and language though EY2P programme which leads into phonological awareness by exposure to story, songs and rhymes. We  follow the Little Wandle programme  which ensures that all children develop the necessary skills to word read. Daily English lessons from Y1 – Y6 are delivered through Ready Steady Write and enhanced through Grammar Shed to teach the grammatical fundamentals of writing and Spelling Shed from Y2 onwards. We also teach daily reading across the school. In F2 and KS1 this is through our Reading Groups and in Key Stage 2 whole class reading is taught through our Reading workshop.

How you can support your child

Reading with your child and sharing stories is a great way to support your child’s literacy development.  We provide children in KS1 and lower KS2 with home reading logs and books so that every child can read each day.  All children have access to the school library to loan books to enjoy reading at home.
