MFL
Through the teaching of MFL, our children will develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, leading to a love of learning languages. Our children will develop an understanding of other cultures and the world around them; promoting empathy, cultural awareness and respect. Children will be able to communicate in a foreign language with others both within and outside of their immediate community, fostering inclusion and social cohesion. In addition, the learning of a foreign language will broaden aspirations; giving our children more opportunities as they grow and enabling them to play a valuable part in our global society. The four key language learning skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing will enable pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning and also helping the children improve overall attainment in other subject areas.
How we teach it
Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children’s skills in the Spanish language, through weekly taught lessons in KS2. Teachers deliver MFL lessons using the Language Angels Scheme which allows children to progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As confidence and skill grows, children record their work through a range of tailored activities to ensure that all children can access the MFL curriculum that is outlined in the National Curriculum.
In addition to implementing the Language Angels scheme of work and resources, we aim to facilitate a whole school approach to foreign language learning along with improved cultural awareness through specialist days such as European Languages and through acknowledging that Christmas is celebrated in a variety of ways in different countries and cultures.
