ART

“The School, Through Its Distinctive Christian Character, Is Outstanding At Meeting The Needs Of All Learners.” (SIAMS)

“If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”

Vincent Van Gogh

Why we teach it?

Art and design enables us to communicate our thoughts, ideas and observations in a practical and expressive way. It stimulates our imagination and creativity offering us an outlet for self-expression whilst also giving us an opportunity to develop our resilience, self-discipline and self-confidence.

Through experience of a variety of materials, tools and techniques our children have the opportunity to creatively record the world around them and giving them freedom to express their own feelings in different representations.

How we teach it?

We have developed our own scheme of work that explores a mixture of classical and contemporary art from a range of different cultures. A diverse range of artists, designers and architects’ drawing, painting, digital and sculpture work is explored. Our children are encouraged to critically analyse the use of line, shape, texture, form, colour, tone and space. They learn the key knowledge associated with the particular type of art and develop their skills through experimentation. We nurture the children’s creative thinking skills and celebrate the children’s Art and Design journeys. We encourage the children to reflect on how their art work does not only focus on the technical aspects that they have developed, but also embodies the children’s feelings and beliefs.
