CURRICULUM INTENT

“The School, Through Its Distinctive Christian Character, Is Outstanding At Meeting The Needs Of All Learners.” (SIAMS)

At Woodchurch CE Primary School we believe in providing the very best quality teaching and learning for all of our pupils so that our school’s vision statement becomes a reality.

We strive to deliver a broad and rich curriculum, designed to engage and excite all learners and provide opportunities to challenge and deepen learning. Our aim is for our children to become curious, creative, critical, resilient and independent learners who are able collaborate with others individuals and groups.

A combination of ‘Mind Friendly’ learning and effective differentiation are designed to ensure personalised learning takes place as individual learning needs are addressed. We aim for all pupils to acquire knowledge and the opportunity to develop key skills by making links between subjects.

Assessment underpins our curriculum. Through ongoing and half termly assessment, the progress of children is tracked and attainment established before targets are set for future learning and personal development. This is supported by information from Assessment for Learning, Pupil Progress Meetings, Subject Leader reports and Pupil Voice.

In addition to our core subjects of English, Maths, Religious Education and Science, children study all subjects in the curriculum. These include ICT (computer skills), History, Geography, Art, Music, Design Technology, Physical Education, and Modern Foreign Languages. With regards to History and Geography, these subjects alternate each half term.

The school works within and beyond the National Curriculum so that the children access a current and relevant curriculum, which contextualizes the world in which they live in right now.

To support the delivery of the curriculum, the children are exposed to a range of valuable and engaging resources including a wide range of literature, visits to places of interest and guest speakers. To connect pupil’s learning with experts from the wider community broadens their perspective of the world they live in. Year group topics link in to a literature scheme known as ‘The Power of Reading’. Through this, the children experience a rich and varied books which are linked to different genres of writing. It also provides a creative approach to the development of the children’s reading and writing skills and overall knowledge.

To showcase our curriculum and the work of our pupils, our school Twitter Feed is updated on a weekly basis for parents, families and the wider community to view.

Teaching and Learning is reviewed on a regular basis to ensure it fulfils the needs of the children, develops key skills, follows the National Curriculum, celebrates excellence and ensures that pupils achieve their potential.
