Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

Welcome to our Year 5 Class Page, here you will find all the information relevant to our lovely Year 5 class at Woodchurch C of E Primary School. For further information, please see the rest of the school website.

PE

PE is every Tuesday in Year 5. Parents should make sure children’s earrings are taken out or covered with tape. Children should come into school in their PE kit on these days.

Homework

In Year 5, new homework goes live on Spelling Shed on a Wednesday and is linked to the spelling session that is completed in class that week.

Pupils should also aim to spend at least 20 minutes a week on TTRockstars in the garage arena.

What does reading look like in Year 5?

In KS2, we do not engage in daily 1:1 reading with the children. Instead, during our reading workshop sessions, the children will have the opportunity to read a variety of new and unfamiliar texts with their class teacher.

During our Reading Workshop sessions, we not only read the new text, we learn how to analyse and pick apart the text. We look at new and unfamiliar vocabulary and explore the language that is being used. Children also have the chance to hone their comprehension skills as we begin to answer questions relating to the text.

Recommended reads

We have lots of books we enjoy reading in Year 5, here are some of our favourites:
  • Coming to England by Floella Benjamin – A powerful read about a young girl who comes to England from Trinidad.
  • Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver  – A great book about a daring adventure full of danger.
  • Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer – A real page turner! Artemis believes he discovered the existence of fairies, and he is determined to prove it.
  • Clockwork by Philip Pullman – An engaging short tale to get those creative writing thoughts flowing.
  • The Witches by Roald Dahl – A Dahl classic that we just can’t get enough of!
  • Bill’s New Frock by Anne Fine  – Bill is forced to go to school in a frilly pink dress, hijinks and chaos ensues.
Let us know if you can recommend a book that your child really enjoys and we’ll share your recommendation with other families.

Keep in touch

We regularly put out key information via Marvellous Me. If you would like up to date information on our class, especially any good behaviours or work the children have been displaying, please us the Marvellous Me app. Please enquire at the school office if you are unsure how to set this up.

For updates from the School Office, including any letters, news or further information relevant to the wider school, we communicate using the ‘Our Schools App’. Again, please feel free to pop into the office if you are unsure how to set this up.
