Year 3

Welcome to Year 3

Welcome to our Year 3 Class Page, here you will find all the information relevant to our lovely Year 3 class at Woodchurch C of E Primary School. For further information, please see the rest of the school website.

PE

PE is every Thursday in Year 3. Parents should make sure children’s earrings are taken out or covered with tape. Children should come into school in their PE kit on these days. Please see Uniform for more information.

Homework

In Year 3, we currently set spelling and timestables homework via SpellingShed and TTRockstars which the children can access via their own logins at home on any device. The class teacher checks the children’s access to these sites regularly.

Reading books are changed every Friday, children take these home each night and will read to you. If you do hear your child read, please sign their reading record!

What does reading look like in Year 3?

In KS2, we do not engage in daily 1:1 reading with the children. Instead, during our reading workshop sessions, the children will have the opportunity to read a variety of new and unfamiliar texts with their class teacher.

During our Reading Workshop sessions, we not only read the new text, we learn how to analyse and pick apart the text. We look at new and unfamiliar vocabulary and explore the language that is being used. Children also have the chance to hone their comprehension skills as we begin to answer questions relating to the text.

Recommended reads

As the children move from KS1 to KS2, they will find the texts they are reading are longer. However, this does not mean that they are tedious – far from it! We have some exciting texts in Year 3 that we enjoy.
  • Leon and the Place Between by Angela McAllister and Grahame Baker-Smith – We have enjoyed reading this as part of our English work. A thrilling tale about a boy who goes to the circus.
  • Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown  – We love Flat Stanley in Year 3. A fantastic series of easily accessible books, particularly for dyslexic readers.
  • Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl – An absolute classic! We love this book and virtually anything by Roald Dahl.
  • The Boy Who Grew Dragons by Andy Shepherd – A lovely adventure story and one we are going to explore in our reading workshop sessions.
  • Football Crazy by Tony Bradman – The majority of our class love football so this is a no-brainer really.
  • Beast Quest by Adam Blade  – A series of books that we enjoy in Year 3. Encourages a love for myths and legends.
Let us know if you can recommend a book that your child really enjoys and we’ll share your recommendation with other families.
