At Woodchurch CE School we recognise that positive behaviour and good discipline has to be worked for – it does not just happen. The school’s approach to behaviour and discipline involves a concerted and consistent effort by all staff to create a positive environment which will contribute in itself to the school’s aim for the all-round development of the child. Positive behaviour and good discipline is the keystone of our Christian community.

In order that we show we are walking in the footsteps of Jesus it is important that we show forgiveness and seek reconciliation. Once an issue is addressed, forgiveness helps us to show our understanding whilst reconciliation helps to rebuild and strengthen relationships.

Without positive behaviours and good discipline our school would not be respected by its children, parents, parish and neighbours within Woodchurch.

Our aim is:

• ‘To foster Christian values within our children so that they grow personally, respect others and make a positive contribution to their local, national and global community.’
• ‘To provide a calm, safe and nurturing environment that supports positive well-being and promotes healthy and active lifestyles, while at the same time allowing our children to take risks.’
• ‘To ensure consistently good and outstanding teaching and learning through creative, engaging and challenging lessons which inspire achievement – leading to a ‘Can do’ culture in which all children are confident in their own abilities and the use of key skills for life.’
• ‘To believe in trying to do the right thing at all times.’
• ‘To understand the importance of taking responsibility for our choices and that the outcomes of our actions can have consequences.’

The school’s approach to good order and discipline concerns the efforts of all  staff to create a positive environment which will contribute in itself to the school’s aim for the all round development of the child.

The following factors have been identified as the essential ingredients in the development of a positive environment, each making a contribution to the whole.

• The pupils
• All adults working with the children
• The classroom environment
• The school environment
• Involvement with parents
• Involvement with the local community

Teachers must be aware that they present an example to the children that can exert a considerable influence.  Your relationships with children should demonstrate a balanced reflection of:-

• Expectancy of high standards
• Respect for the children and their effort
• Avoid familiarity
• Consistency of effort and application
• Good humour within given situations
• Enthusiasm for the task in hand
• A sense of fair play and justice

Teachers should;

• Project a fair, consistent, encouraging and positive image.
• Know the children, be aware of them and respect their needs so that activities can be planned which motivate and extend all children.
• Value the work of the children by discussing and marking all work promptly and constructively.
• Implement clear guidelines to maintain everyday routines of the classroom.
• With the active support of the children, keep an attractive, clean and tidy classroom in which the layout reflects thought given to easy movement and accessibility to equipment and resources.
• Help create interesting displays which reflect interest in, and valuing of, children’s work

You should be aware of the constant need to encourage children to:

• Be aware of themselves as people
• Show consideration to others
• Look after their property and the property of others
• Try their best at all time
• Take pride in their achievements
• Be well mannered and polite
• Seek help if they have a problem
• Help to look after their immediate environment
• Realise that they can make a positive contribution to their own well being
• Realise that their attitudes and behaviour can lead to both positive  and negative reactions
• Foster the conditions and atmosphere necessary for effective learning.
• Develop positive attitudes to school work and promote academic success.
• Encourage positive and caring attitudes to all members of the community.
• Set high standards of personal appearance and cleanliness within the school.
