Why we teach it

We believe that the study of History inspires a curiosity in children. It encourages them to ask critical questions and enables them to have a better understanding of the world in which they live. History helps pupils to understand the process of change and to gain a sense of their own identity within a social, political, religious, cultural and economic background.

By learning History, our pupils will develop their ability to think critically, challenge and evaluate evidence, and ask questions – the essentials skills behind being an excellent Historian.

How we teach it

At Woodchurch CE Primary, we have developed a History Curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum and supported by the Historical Association’s Scheme of Work. It is taught across each term in every year group across the school.

The subject is taught discretely as well as being woven within other curriculum subjects such as Literacy and Art.  There is a strong focus placed on chronology so that children understand their place in time. We aim to create a supportive and collaborative ethos for learning by providing investigative and enquiry-based learning opportunities. This includes trips and visitors to support our studies and enhance our learning journey and experiences.
