Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to our Year 1 Class Page, here you will find all the information relevant to our lovely Year 1 class at Woodchurch C of E Primary School. For further information, please see the rest of the school website.

PE

PE is every Thursday and Friday in Year 1. Parents should make sure children’s earrings are taken out or covered with tape. Children should come into school in their PE kit on Thursday, and will only need pumps on the Friday.

Homework

Homework in Year 1 is given out on a Wednesday, and is due back on a Monday.

What does reading look like in Year 1?

Your child will have a reading practice session each day with one of the KS1 Teaching team.

Your child will work through group reads, paired reading and individual reading practice throughout the week based on the focus sound they are learning.

Each week we will send home two reading books: One book will focus on the focus sound your child is working on via ‘Phonics Shed’ – the scheme we use to teach early reading and Phonics; the other will support this work but may be a fiction or non fiction book.

We kindly ask that you read little and often with your child – this will help build their confidence and their fluency.

Please record when you have read with your child in their Reading Record.

Recommended reads

We have lots of books we enjoy reading in Year 1, here are some of our favourites:
  • We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen – Fabulous for spotting different sounds and acting out
  • Goodnight Everyone by Chris Haughton – A super story to share at bedtime
  • Can I join your club? by Stephen Laberis – a super book highlighting how our differences can be our strengths
  • Man on the Moon by Stephen Bartram – Can you spot the aliens? Bob thinks aliens don’t exist – can you find them?
  • The Pirate Mums by Jodie Lancet-Grant – Learning about how families are different and that is okay
  • Look Up by Nathan Bryon – A book about Rocket, who’s trying to be the best scientist that ever lived!
Let us know if you can recommend a book that your child really enjoys and we’ll share your recommendation with other families.

Keep in touch

We regularly put out key information via Marvellous Me. If you would like up to date information on our class, especially any good behaviours or work the children have been displaying, please us the Marvellous Me app. Please enquire at the school office if you are unsure how to set this up.

For updates from the School Office, including any letters, news or further information relevant to the wider school, we communicate using the ‘Our Schools App’. Again, please feel free to pop into the office if you are unsure how to set this up.
