GEOGRAPHY

“The School, Through Its Distinctive Christian Character, Is Outstanding At Meeting The Needs Of All Learners.” (SIAMS)

“The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.”

Barack Obama

Former President of the United States of America.

Why we teach it

At Woodchurch CE we have created a bespoke scheme of work that is underpinned by the Royal Geographical Society and the Geographical Association to deliver the required National Curriculum objectives for the subject. It is taught  half termly in every year group throughout the school.

We encourage our children to develop a greater understanding of their world and their place in it. By asking questions, we help them to develop a range of investigation and problem-solving skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which can be used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives; to promote children’s interest and understanding about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

How we teach it

Starting with the locality, we prepare our children for the ‘bigger world’ using a broad range of resources.  Our oracy skills are woven into our curriculum and we encourage our children to debate, present and question. Each lesson we aim to feed their curious minds, develop their general knowledge and develop themselves as global citizens of the future.
