“ There isn’t any distinction between reader and a writer – reading is so much a part of it”-

Dermot Healy

“What I love most about reading: it gives you the ability to reach higher ground. And keep climbing.”

Oprah Winfrey

Why we teach it

At Woodchurch CE Primary we are committed to the fact that one of  the most important things we can do for our pupils is to teach them to read well. We aim to foster a love of reading in our children helping them to become lifelong readers who are confident and competent readers.  We aim to support our children in developing the skills to not just read for pleasure, but to read for purpose and learning.

We believe that reading and writing are intrinsically linked and that writing is strengthened by a love of reading. Our English curriculum is literature led, immersing children in the wonders of high-quality texts. We encourage children to continually build on their skills and knowledge to enable them to express and communicate themselves for a variety of purposes.

How we teach it

In Early Years, we focus on early development of communication and language though EY2P programme which leads into phonological awareness by exposure to story, songs and rhymes. We  follow the Phonics Shed programme  which ensures that all children develop the necessary skills to word read. Daily English lessons from Y1 – Y6 are delivered through Power of Reading and enhanced through Grammar Shed to teach the grammatical fundamentals of writing. We also teach daily reading across the school. In F2 and KS1 this is through our Reading Groups and in Key Stage 2 whole class reading is taught through our Reading workshop.

How you can support your child

Reading with your child and sharing stories is a great way to support your child’s literacy development.  We provide children in KS1 and lower KS2 with home reading logs and books so that every child can read each day.  All children have access to the school library to loan books to enjoy reading at home.
