MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

“The School, Through Its Distinctive Christian Character, Is Outstanding At Meeting The Needs Of All Learners.” (SIAMS)

“One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.”

Why we teach it

At Woodchurch CE we strive to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about all languages. We aim to enable children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. We also aim to provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes and to learn new ways of thinking.

Learning a new language not only allows children to express their thoughts in another language, but also allows them to have a deeper understanding of their own language.

Through their language learning, children will also develop a deeper understanding and tolerance of other cultures, traditions and the world that they live in.

We aim to lay the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

How we teach it

Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children’s skills in the Spanish language, through weekly taught lessons in KS2. Teachers deliver MFL lessons using the Language Angels Scheme which allows children to progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As confidence and skill grows, children record their work through a range of tailored activities to ensure that all children can access the MFL curriculum that is outlined in the National Curriculum.

In addition to implementing the Language Angels scheme of work and resources, we aim to facilitate a whole school approach to foreign language learning along with improved cultural awareness through specialist days such as European Languages and through acknowledging that Christmas is celebrated in a variety of ways in different countries and cultures.
