PHYSICAL EDUCATION

“The School, Through Its Distinctive Christian Character, Is Outstanding At Meeting The Needs Of All Learners.” (SIAMS)

“Sport has literally changed my life. I’m here because of sport. It has given me a lot of confidence, a lot of courage, and a lot of discipline. It’s helped me to be the person that I’ve grown to be today.”

Why we teach it

At Woodchurch C.E. Primary School we believe that Physical Education is a fundamental part of our overall well-being, helping to develop healthy lifestyles and support a positive state of mind in all young people. We provide a wide range of opportunities to develop this through sporting skills taught within the daily timetable and outside of the normal curriculum time. Within the Physical Education curriculum, it is our intent that the children will recognise themselves as Communicators (Orators), Readers, Explorers and Learners with opportunities to develop these skills and apply these skills within other aspects of learning.

How we teach it

The physical development of our children in EYFS is encouraged as an integral part of the EYFS curriculum. Physical development is one of the prime areas of learning. The two related early learning goals are Moving and Handling and Health and self-care. The children are encouraged to develop confidence and control of the way they move and the way they handle equipment. All children are given the opportunity to use a wide range of resources to support specific skills. In EYFS, the children access a range of activities daily that will develop their fine and gross motor skills and have access to a dedicated outdoor area.

Our P.E curriculum is sequenced precisely to ensure progression of knowledge and skills throughout our children’s primary education, thus enabling children to build upon prior experiences and apply these fluently, with confidence. Children receive coaching to develop fundamental skills through a variety of activities and games suitable to their key stage. In Key Stage two, all children have the opportunity to attend swimming lessons enabling them to leave Key Stage 2 as a competent swimmer.

PE Primary Passport

All staff have access to a set of progressive lessons through P.E. Passport. The hall and the outside space are timetabled in order to give each class an opportunity to access P.E lessons for 2 hours per week. We teach children the knowledge of the basic rules for a range of sports and activities to apply in competition, with a focus on developing good sporting attitudes. Our children learn in a safe environment and have a foundation for lifelong physical activity.
